Light, life and contemporary, working-class Mumbai textures are writer/director Payal Kapadia, who won the Grand Prix for the Revelation Fiction Feature at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Focusing on two roommates who also work together in a city hospital, Prabha Care (Kani Kusruti) and recently used Anu (Divya Prabha), a cook parvaty (Chhaya Kadam), Capadia’s film about relationships and heartache, hope and disappointment. Prabha, her husband, her husband from a distant German marriage, is courted by a doctor at a hospital; Anu is in romance with a Muslim man that must keep him secret from his strict Hindu family; Parvaty finds that his apartment suddenly deals with eviction. Capadia seizes the hustle and bustle of the metropolis and the outdoor tranquility of the coastal village, which has an equal glow, and with excellent actresses and camera lyrical naturalism, which occasionally drifts into dreamlike sweating. All we think is that light is an enthusiastic study of the transformative power of friendship and fraternity, in all its complexity and richness.
